Environment

Our world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges,
and there is an urgent need to address them.

Through our green products and digital solution, we are contributing to creating a more sustainable future. We are also working toward decarbonizing our business and have set a goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the entire value chain by 2050.
We have a vision, a strategy, and an action plan to achieve all our sustainability goals.

Leading a Sustainable Future : Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Environmental Commitment

Our environmental vision and long-term targets

Hitachi Environmental Innovation 2050

We all want to pass on a healthy and prosperous planet to future generations, so the Hitachi Group has established an environmental vision and, Environmental Innovation 2050. At Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, we share this vision and are focused on helping to achieve the group's three long-term targets: decarbonization, circular economy, and nature positive.

Decarbonization

Hitachi Group aims for net-zero GHG emissions across the entire value chain by fiscal 2050.
This target is a science-based net-zero target*1 aligned with the 1.5℃ goal set by the Paris Agreement and has been certified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)*2, an international climate change initiative.
We are advancing initiatives to accelerate decarbonization, including adopting renewable energy, installing energy-saving equipment, and developing products that achieve the highest energy conservation.

Hitachi Group's Targets for Decarbonized Society
  • 1 GHG emission reduction targets consistent with the Paris Agreement and based on scientific evidence
  • 2 An international initiative in which companies and financial institutions set GHG emission reduction targets based on scientific evidence and have their validity reviewed and certified

Circular economy

Hitachi Group aims to achieve “Circular Transformation” by fiscal 2050, transitioning resources and business toward a circular model.
We are advancing initiatives to accelerate the circular economy. These include reducing landfill waste in our manufacturing processes, improving the effective utilization of plastic waste, and remanufacturing/rebuilding products.

Nature positive

Hitachi Group aims to minimize the impact of its business activities on nature by fiscal 2050 and to contribute to nature resilience, including mitigating damage caused by natural disasters and enabling faster recovery.
We are advancing initiatives to accelerate nature positivity, such as reducing water usage and identifying and launching nature-restoration projects.

Green strategy

As part of the Hitachi Group, Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems is committed to achieving Hitachi's environmental goals. We have adopted the group's green strategy, which is helping to accelerate the green transformation (GX) and bring long-term benefits to our customers, the communities where we operate, and the world.

This strategy has two pillars. The first, which we call GX for CORE, is to achieve carbon neutrality across our operations. The second, called GX for GROWTH, is to help reducing our customers’ environmental impact through Green Product and Circular Economy. These two pillars guide the activities of all Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems locations around the world.

As we contribute to a decarbonized society and the circular economy, we know we will make a meaningful and lasting contribution to our world.

Implementing our green strategy

Moving toward net-zero

In GX for CORE, Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems aims to have the highest possible level of energy efficiency at our factories and offices worldwide. This includes updating equipment such as transformers, air compressors, and air conditioners to the most energy-efficient models; switching to LED lighting; and purchasing renewable electricity. We are also investing heavily in renewable energy. For example, we have had solar power generation systems installed at some of the Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Group's domestic and overseas factories.

Recently, we have been encouraged to see some meaningful progress towards achieving these goals. We have been advancing initiatives to reduce GHG emissions by implementing energy-saving measures, introducing renewable energy power generation facilities, procuring renewable energy power and certificates from external sources, and utilizing carbon credits. By the 2024 fiscal year, we achieved carbon neutrality at 54 sites, including domestic and overseas business sites, factories, service stations, and offices, which account for more than 95% of our group's GHG emissions (Scope 1*3 and 2*4).

Additionally, we aim to reduce the offset ratio (based on 2019 emissions, which account for approximately 20% of our decarbonization target baseline year emissions) in 2024 to 17% or less by 2030, through continuing our efforts of reducing Scope1 such as efficient operation and electrification of equipment.

  • 3 Direct GHG emissions from fuel use and industrial processes at our own facilities
  • 4 Indirect GHG emissions associated with the use of electricity and heat purchased by our company

At Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, we are committed to helping society become carbon neutral.

Also, in GX for GROWTH, we are in the process of reducing our customers' environmental impact.

Through the green products we manufacture. Our highly energy-efficient air compressors, motors, transformers, factory-wide energy management systems, and utility operation monitoring systems, for instance, can contribute significantly to energy savings and improved energy efficiency at our customers' operations. We are currently working to expand our green product portfolio.

The digital, end-to-end service solutions we provide are also helping to reduce our customers' GHG. Many of our products can be connected to Hitachi Connected Service , our IoT monitoring service, which collects real-time operational data and provides predictive diagnoses about equipment before problems occur. This allows for the optimal operation and maintenance of industrial equipment — which translates into energy savings.

Advancing the transition to a circular economy

Another approach in GX for GROWTH is to help advance the transition to a circular economy and become a society that reuses and recycles its resources sustainably.

This process begins with our design and development departments. They implement eco-designs, which ensure products are highly energy efficient and are easy to disassemble. Our procurement department is also focused on increasing the use of recycled and environmentally friendly materials.

Fundamental to our transition to the circular economy is our 5R initiative. We support the remanufacturing, rebuilding, repair, reuse, and recycling of our equipment, ensuring long-term use and reducing waste.
