Environment

Our world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges,
and there is an urgent need to address them.

Through our green products and digital technology, we are contributing to creating a decarbonized society, the transition to a circular economy, and a more sustainable future. We are also working toward decarbonizing our business and have set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality across our value chain by 2050.
We have a vision, a strategy, and an action plan to achieve all our sustainability goals.

Our environmental vision and long-term targets

Hitachi Environmental Innovation 2050

We all want to pass on a healthy and prosperous planet to future generations, so the Hitachi Group has established an environmental vision and, Environmental Innovation 2050. At Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, we share this vision and are focused on helping to achieve the group's three long-term targets: a decarbonized society, a resource-efficient society, and a harmonized society with nature.

A decarbonized society

We are taking steps to become carbon neutral at our factories and offices by 2030 and throughout our value chain by 2050. The initiatives we are taking to accomplish this include adopting renewable energy, installing energy-saving equipment, developing products that achieve the highest energy conservation, and choosing to work with partners helping to accelerate decarbonization.

Hitachi Group's Targets for Decarbonized Society

A resource-efficient society

We will improve efficiency in the use of water and resources by 50%, compared with 2010 levels, by 2050. This includes reducing water and resources use in our manufacturing processes, introducing more stringent management of water intake and yield rate, and reusing purified wastewater and materials.

A harmonized society with nature

We are taking action to minimize our impact on the natural world.

This includes reducing our negative impact on the environment, such as by limiting waste, cutting our emissions of greenhouse gasses and hazardous chemical substances and , improving how we procure raw materials.

We are also involved in activities that make a positive impact on the environment, such as through beach cleanup days, tree planting, and taking care of the land our factories are built on and their biodiversity.

The Hitachi Group wants all its companies to stay on track to meet our long-term environmental targets, so it updates its short-term Environmental Action Plan every three years. Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems is responsible for achieving these targets across our operations.

Green strategy

As part of the Hitachi Group, Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems is committed to achieving Hitachi's environmental goals. We have adopted the group's green strategy, which is helping to accelerate the green transformation (GX) and bring long-term benefits to our customers, the communities where we operate, and the world.

This strategy has two pillars. The first, which we call GX for CORE, is to achieve carbon neutrality across our operations. The second, called GX for GROWTH, is to help decarbonize our customers' operations, which will reduce CO2 emissions in society and contribute to the creation of a circular economy. These two pillars guide the activities of all Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems locations around the world.

As we become carbon neutral and contribute to the circular economy, we know we will make a meaningful and lasting contribution to our world.

Implementing our green strategy

Moving toward carbon neutrality

In GX for CORE, we are working hard to make our business sites carbon neutral by 2030, reducing greenhouse gas emissions classified as Scope 1 (direct emissions from our operations) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions from the energy we purchase), We are also striving to achieve carbon neutrality throughout our entire value chain by 2050. This means reducing greenhouse gas emissions classified as Scope 3, which include upstream emissions related to the purchase of resources, products, and services, and downstream emissions related to use and disposal of the products and services we sell.

Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems aims to have the highest possible level of energy efficiency at our factories and offices worldwide. This includes updating equipment such as transformers, air compressors, and air conditioners to the most energy-efficient models; switching to LED lighting; and purchasing renewable electricity. We are also investing heavily in renewable energy. For example, we have had solar power generation systems installed at some of the Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Group's factories in Japan, Thailand, and China.

Recently, we have been encouraged to see some meaningful progress towards achieving these goals. 14 factories around the world in our group have achieved carbon neutrality by reducing energy-related CO2 emissions of Scope1 and Scope2 through a combination of the use of 100% renewable electricity, energy conservation initiatives, and the purchase of renewable energy certificates and neutralization credits.

At Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, we are committed to helping society become carbon neutral.

Also, in GX for GROWTH, we are in the process of reducing our customers' environmental impact.

Through the green products we manufacture. Our highly energy-efficient air compressors, motors, transformers, factory-wide energy management systems, and utility operation monitoring systems, for instance, can contribute significantly to energy savings and improved energy efficiency at our customers' operations. We are currently working to expand our green product portfolio.

The digital, end-to-end service solutions we provide are also helping to reduce our customers' CO2. Many of our products can be connected to Hitachi Connected Service , our IoT monitoring service, which collects real-time operational data and provides predictive diagnoses about equipment before problems occur. This allows for the optimal operation and maintenance of industrial equipment — which translates into energy savings.

At Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, we are committed to helping society become carbon neutral.

Advancing the transition to a circular economy

Another approach in GX for GROWTH is to help advance the transition to a circular economy and become a society that reuses and recycles its resources sustainably.

This process begins with our design and development departments. They implement eco-designs, which ensure products are highly energy efficient and are easy to disassemble. Our procurement department is also focused on increasing the use of recycled and environmentally friendly materials.

Fundamental to our transition to the circular economy is our 5R initiative. We support the remanufacturing, rebuilding, repair, reuse, and recycling of our equipment, ensuring long-term use and reducing waste.
